Rosehip seed oil has become widely recognized as an effective skin and beauty care agent in the last decade, with great interest surrounding its scientifically-validated beauty-enhancing effects. The oil has been heralded as a miracle cure for skin, useful for a great myriad of conditions, from premature aging and sun damage to scarring and other damage. What is this wonderful red liquid, where does it come from, how does it work, and most importantly, can it work for you?

Rosehip seed oil is extracted from the seed within the fruit of the wild thorny rose bush. Native to Chile, the plant is now cultivated elsewhere in South America with many countries producing the oil. Also found under the name ‘Rosa Mosqueta’, the oil has been used by native people for hundreds of years, but only recently became known to the rest of the world.

The red colored oil can be either solvent extracted or ‘cold-pressed’ – pressing is the really way to go, as there is no chance of any solvent residues remaining in the final product, and it is easier on the environment. The cold-pressed oil is the closest to nature; it has a high essential fatty acid content, and is considered more delicate than other seed oils. For this reasons, pure rosehip seed oil should be kept in a cool place, out of direct light, and should be used within 1 year of purchase. Otherwise the more fragile of the fatty acids could begin to turn bad, and your skin might not be so fond of them.

Rosehip seed oil is an excellent source of natural vitamin E and natural vitamin A, or ‘trans-retinoic acid’. Retinoic acid, the acid derivative of vitamin A, is the active ingredient found in Retin-A or Tretinoin. Retin-A (a pharmaceutical preparation) has been heralded as a wrinkle cure because of its ability to increase skin cell proliferation – or speed the time it takes for your skin to regenerate. In fact, rosehip seed oil has been extensively studied for many of the same actions attributed to Retin-A, and has been shown effective without side effects (like over-drying and peeling – though unlike Retin-A, it should not be used to treat acne).

The first major study on rosehip seed oil was performed in 1983 by a team of researchers at the University of Santiago, Chile. The study’s participants included individuals with diverse forms of skin damage: deep wrinkles and other premature aging, UV damage, radiation damage, acne scarring, burn scarring, dermatitis, and other problems of this type. Rosehip seed oil was shown to have significant, noticeable effects in regenerating the skin, reducing wrinkles and scars, and helping the skin to regain its natural color and tone.

Another later study was conducted on women ages 25-35 with extensive premature aging of their skin. Again, rosehip seed oil significantly reduced the appearance of wrinkles and sun spots after daily application for four months. Research has continued on the oil, with one study noting: “On some skin troubles like superficial wrinkles, chestnut spots and ephelides, good results have been obtained. After 16 weeks of treatment, wrinkles and spots become imperceptible.” The oil has been used to successfully treat a long list of skin related conditions, including: age spots, wrinkles and premature aging, sun damage, scars from acne, burns, and surgery, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, hyper-pigmentation, brittle nails, and even dry and damaged hair.

Besides its regenerative properties, rosehip seed oil is also an excellent moisturizer. This is most likely due to its high essential fatty acid content (fatty acids that the body cannot produce itself), which are necessary for healthy skin. The oil penetrates the upper layers of the skin quickly and, being known as a ‘dry’ moisturizer, does not leave the skin feeling greasy or oily.

As for daily use of rosehip seed oil, it is considered extremely gentle and can be applied undiluted to the skin. It may also be blended with other oils like jojoba and sweet almond, and will still have wonderful effects at 10% of the total concentration. Further, rosehip seed oil makes an excellent carrier oil for aromatherapy – blends with essential oils having skin regenerative and soothing properties are highly recommended.

For improvement of scarring, a simple blend of 20 drops of Helichrysum Italicum per 1 ounce of rosehip seed oil, applied daily to the area, can be helpful. Helichrysum is known for its content of regenerative ‘ketones’. For a more luxurious beauty blend, try the following in 4 ounces of rosehip seed:

5 drops Helichrysum
5 drops Lavender
3 drops Sandalwood
3 drops Neroli
3 drops Carrot Seed
3 drops Geranium
2 drops Roman Chamomile
2 drops Jasmine
1 drop Palmarosa
1 drop Ylang Ylang

Even simply the Helichrysum and Lavender will go a long way – Lavender oil is very gentle, and is also known to have regenerative properties.

So, whether using rosehip seed oil for healing your skin, or simply giving it a little nourishment, you will almost certainly be happy with the results. This luscious oil, with its broad range of positive effects, is sure to take a prominent place in your natural beauty botanical collection.

The benefits of fish oil are so numerous that it’s easier to break them down into specific systems of the body. Fish oil benefits are due primarily to the omega 3 fatty acids that they contain. Each benefit identified is dependent upon the omega3 content.

Let’s just assume that you have chosen a good brand and the omega3 content is high. These are the things that you can expect to see, according to scientific research.

The Benefits to the Skin

Omega 3 fatty acids are one of the components of the skin’s sebum, our natural lubricant and moisturizer. Studies have shown that supplementation is beneficial for people with psoriasis, eczema and acne.

One trial showed there was benefit for people worried about wrinkles, sagging and the other signs of aging. After three months of supplementation, there was a 10% improvement in the skin’s firmness.

Those benefits might be considered purely cosmetic. But, who doesn’t want to look as young as they feel? Often the better you look, the better you feel, too.

How it Benefits the Digestive System

Some of the benefits to the digestive system have been known for many years. It helps to keep the body regular, because it has some natural laxative effects, particularly at high doses.

Recent studies have shown that such supplements are also beneficial to people with inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. It may also be beneficial for people with irritable bowel and acid reflux, because of its anti-inflammatory activity.

How it Benefits the Heart

The benefits to the heart are actually several. First, it acts as a natural anti-coagulant, similar to the effect that aspirin has. Second, it helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Third, its antioxidant activity reduces the risk that fatty acids will stick to the arterial walls, causing hardening and age-related heart disease.

How it Benefits the Brain

The majority of the brain, the back of the eye and other parts of the central nervous system are made up of omega3 fatty acids, primarily DHA. DHA levels in the bloodstream are known to be lower in people suffering from depression.

Studies indicate that these supplements may be beneficial for people that are depressed, have ADHD, memory problems or trouble concentrating. It is likely to be good for anyone that wants to reduce their risk of age-related eye diseases and dementia.

Why it May Reduce Your Risk of Cancer and Help You Live Longer

Because of its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant characteristics, it addresses two of the causes of cellular aging and two things that play a role in cancer. Inflammation and free radical damage are two of the causes of cellular aging and they both play a role in the development of cancer.

Antioxidants of all kinds neutralize free radicals. Natural anti-inflammatories fight chronic inflammation.

The potential benefits of fish oil supplements on your good health are numerous, and warrant serious consideration.

But before deciding which supplements to use, be sure to research the various manufacturing processes! Get the wrong ones and you could be smelling a little fishy every time you burp.

DATELINE: COHASSET AND PLYMOUTH, MASS… South Shore Skin Center practitioners share their insight on various foods that may (and those that may not) help you maintain beautiful skin:  Foods that are rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables are highly beneficial to the skin.  Dairy is not beneficial to the skin, but it’s not bad for it either. There has been some controversy about dairy causing acne, but the doctors at South Shore Skin Center maintain that dairy does not cause acne.  Whole grains that are low-fat are good for the skin. Bear in mind that grains such as flaxseed are better absorbed by the body if they are ground into meal before eating them. Adding at least one teaspoon of ground flaxseed to your diet per day is sufficient.  Good hydration is good for the skin. Beware of drinking beverages containing caffeine, which is a diuretic. Drinking a lot of caffeinated beverages is not recommended because caffeine in large amounts will have a dehydrating effect. Drinking water is best for hydration.  Try to eat foods that are rich in Omega 3s, which are essential fatty acids and benefit all organs. A typical diet that includes soybean oil has a much higher ratio of Omega 6, which actually blocks Omega 3 absorption. It’s better to eat foods made with olive or canola oil as these have a low ratio of Omega 6 and will not block the absorption of Omega 3s.  “When it comes to the health and beauty of the skin, the foods that we eat really do play an important part,” noted Dr. Richard Eisen, a board certified dermatologist and founder of South Shore Skin Center.  South Shore Skin Center Founded in 1984, South Shore Skin Center is one of Massachusetts’ most progressive dermatology practices offering a wide range of medical, surgical and cosmetic services.  South Shore Skin Center’s cosmetic services include Fraxel re:pair and re:store; Gentle YAG, innovative Laser, IPL (Intensive Pulse Light), Thermage and treatments for age spots, acne scarring, birth marks, tattoos and more. The practice also offers a full range of affordable anti-aging services including Botox, wrinkle fillers, Microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels.  South Shore Skin Center offices are located at 223 Chief Justice Cushing Highway, Suite 202 in Cohasset, Mass. Ten years ago I remember how much I feared the idea of doing a colon cleanse. So much so that I easily put up with the uncomfortable experiences of IBS. (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) I still refused to do a colon cleanse. I thought I was eating healthy, yet I still had terrible IBS. I finally did my first of several colon cleanse and am very thankful that I did. If you are on the fence about doing your first colon cleanse here are just a few of the questions I get from people new to the idea of colon cleansing. Hopefully, these answers will help you decide if a colon cleanse is right for you.

1. How do I know I should do a colon cleanse?

If you are an adult eating the typical American diet you are in need of a colon cleanse. The more meat, processed foods, fried foods, cheese and dairy, sugar, sodas, alcohol, roasted peanuts and coffee you consume the more you are in need of a colon cleanse. If your diet is mainly raw fruits, vegetables, brown rice, lean fish and salads the less likely you are in need of a regular colon cleanse. It is my opinion that a vast majority of Americans over the age of twenty are in need of regular colon cleanses. Some of the obvious indicators that your body needs a colon cleanse are:

* Loss of energy
* Lack of mental focus and poor memory.
* Unexplained headaches
* Bad breath and foul smelling stools
* Constipation
* Skin problems. Acne, rashes etc.
* Irritable Bowel Syndrome
* Weight gain
* Protruding belly
* Strong cravings for sugar or salt.

2. Will I have to be in the bathroom every 15 minutes?

This is a very good question. Since every body is different it is not possible to give an absolute answer. There is a somewhat easy solution for people with this question. Start the first day with half the dose and see how your body responds. Another option is to start in the middle of the day and only do half of the daily dose the first day. Listen to your body. If that is too much cut back on dosage until you are getting results that are manageable. It is also a good idea to start on a Saturday to get an idea if the cleanse is going to interfere with your work. The whole idea of the cleanse is to rid your colon of excess waste and toxins so your goal should be to have three to four bowel movements a day during your cleanse. It also depends on what your are eating during the time of your cleanse. Large amounts of alcohol, coffee or sweets could aggravate your system even more while using the herbal components of the cleanse.

3. What should I eat while on the colon cleanse?

You do not have to starve yourself. One of the ideas of a cleanse is to give the digestive tract time to heal or mend. The less energy the body spends on digestion the more energy it allocates to healing cells and organs. So stay away from high fat content foods, greasy foods, processed and chemical laden foods, high sugar or salt content foods, large amounts of coffee, cheese and dairy, and alcohol. It is a good idea to replenish your system by feeding it good healthy nutrient dense greens or fresh vegetable juices. Eat more fruits and vegetables, brown rice is excellent for fiber and green salads. Use the colon cleanse as an excuse to start some good habits. Eat an apple for a snack versus a candy bar. You should try to avoid red meat. Substitute a smaller amount of fish or lean chicken or turkey (hormone and chemical free if possible.)

4. What can I expect from my first colon cleanse?

What most people say is that they feel lighter. They may lose only two or three actual pounds, but it was toxic sludge that they eliminated from their system. People say they have more energy, have fewer colds, their memory has improved, less gas, skin and hair is improved, bad breath is eliminated, less facial breakouts and they just feel much more alive and less irritable. Some people report losing more than 5-10 pounds during a typical two week colon cleanse, but on the average most people lose two to five pounds. Most people come away from a colon cleanse saying: “Wow! That was really worth the effort!”

5. How often do I need to cleanse.

Most cleansing specialists say you should do a colon cleanse four times a year or with each changing season. In today’s busy world that is sometimes difficult to do. I applaud clients who are able to do two or three cleanses every twelve months. Although you will experience real results from your first colon cleanse the average person has a ways to go. Remember, the average adult has years of impacted fecal matter clogging your intestinal walls. It comes away a layer at a time. It took years to accumulate and will not go away overnight. You will feel better after each cleanse you do as long as your diet cooperates with your colon cleansing routine. An occasional diet let down is normal, so don’t be hard on yourself!

6. Are there any exercises I can do to help with my colon cleanse?

This is a good question. Any exercise that gets the blood flowing helps to start moving impurities out of the body. Exercises that stimulate the lymph system such as jogging or jumping on a trampoline are especially good. Stretching and any yoga exercises are also good. There is one set of exercises I recommend. They are called the Five Tibetans and are a series of twenty-one Hatha Yoga movements blended into five exercises. They open up pathways in the body and seem to rejuvenate and help heal the body. A complete description of the exercises is listed on my website.

Curcumin research is exploding right now as the scientific community discovers more and more incredible health benefits from it, but how does this affect you, and can you benefit also?

Curcumin is the active ingredient of turmeric, an herb used for centuries in Chinese and Indian medicine to cure a vast array of ailments and diseases, but only recently coming to our attention in the West.

One scientist described it as one of the most perfect designer substances for fighting cancer. It has been shown to induce the cancerous cells to kill themselves while leaving the healthy ones alone. Compare this to chemotherapy which kills the healthy cells too, and you can see what all the excitement is about in curcumin research.

It appears that it can be of great benefit to sufferers of dementia, like Alzheimers by to helping to connect the neural pathways that can break down causing memory loss, in part due to its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities.

Other research has shown how it can protect the heart from disease and lower bad or LDL cholesterol levels, helping to keep the arteries clear and preventing strokes. It can also be very beneficial for the skin, in cases of psoriasis and acne, and enable the body to detoxify and eliminate the toxins from the body at an increased rate.

There doesnt seem that there is much it cant do! And curcumin research is ongoing so we have many more benefits to look forward to.

Taking preventative measures against potential disease is the best way to go, and you can enjoy the wonderful curcumin benefits by taking it as part of a high quality nutritional supplement as I do, so you get the benefits of other nutrients and from their interaction with each other.

Look for a 98% pure curcumin extract to gain the maximum from this, as any less and you will be losing out on some of the health benefits.

So there you have it, a little insight into curcumin research and how this amazing substance can help you to maintain optimal health and prevent health issues in the future.

Stop me if you have heard this already. The water being supplied to our homes is nothing but impure and terribly unsafe drinking water. The very thought of over 80,000 pollutants present in this water really gives me chills.

We need to accept the fact that this water is coming after traveling a long distance. It needs to cover the entire span from a natural reservoir to the water supply companys reservoir through old, rusty pipes and finally to our homes.

While covering this distance, there are a whole lot of chances for it to become polluted. First there are animal feces and debris that can easily get into the open natural reservoirs. Then there are pesticides and fertilizers that seep into the ground and contaminate the water.

This water is then collected in a big reservoir by the water companies and disinfectants like chlorine are added to keep the bacterial growth at bay. This addition of chlorine is nothing but one more step towards producing unsafe water.

Then there are old rusty pipes which are ideal dwelling homes for bacteria, algae, cysts and viruses. Finally when the water reaches our home – no prize for guessing – it is badly contaminated. It has various types of pollutants ranging from organic to inorganic, from chemical to synthetic products.

It is not difficult to imagine the consequences of consuming such impure and unsafe drinking water. It leads to various health ailments ranging from acne to stomach infections; from cholera to typhoid and from cancer to heart and brain disorders.

After knowing all these facts, would you let your family consume such unsafe drinking water? I couldnt.

I started researching about the ways and options to ensure the purity of the water. While using bottled water was one easy option but there are numerous unanswered questions on its quality itself.

So, instead I opted for a home water purifier system. There are many available in the market today. While any purifier is better than having no purifier at all; you must keep in mind one important consideration.

The purifiers which are based on Reverse Osmosis strip off essential minerals present in the natural water. These minerals are very much required for the normal functioning of the body and drinking water rich in them is one way to ensure their regular dose.

So, dont go for these purifiers unless you decide to take natural supplements to compensate for the multiple mineral deficiencies.

Instead select an advanced purifier based on cutting edge technologies like ion exchange and sub micron filtration. These filters are economically priced and are very easy to maintain.

Not only do they effectively filter out all impurities; they also ensure that the natural minerals are not removed from the water. This makes the water safe and ideal to be consumed.

Understanding the serious consequences of consuming unsafe drinking water, it is time for you to start exploring the option of having a home water purifier. After all there is nothing more important than the health of your family. Start your research today. There is nothing worse than waking up in the morning, looking in the mirror, and there it is in all its glory. A brand new shiny pimple stuck on your face. It’s a never ending battle, no sooner do you get one cleared away then a new pimple pops up in a different spot. No matter what you do or the latest treatment you try your pimples just keep coming back. So what causes these embarrassing outbreaks? Propionibacterium acnes; otherwise known as bacteria. This bacteria, which normally lives on the skin, is able to grow in plugged hair follicles or pores. Normally sebum, and oily substance that flows to the skins surface, keeps the bacteria from entering the follicle. Pimples develop when the sebum, cells called keratinocytes that line the follicle and the hair itself form a plug allowing the bacteria to enter and grow in the plugged follicle. The body reacts to this invasion by sending white blood cells that cause inflammation. Eventually the wall of the plugged follicle disintegrates and the infection spreads into the surrounding skin leading to lesions and pimples. There are several factors which lead to these outbreaks of pimples and for some people make an already bad condition worse. • Hormones †This is particularly true of teens going through puberty as well as a womans hormone changes during her monthly menstrual cycle, pregnancy and even the birth control pills she is taking. • Oil from skin products and cosmetics. • Pressure from tight or restrictive clothing, sports helmets, backpack straps and anything else that does not allow the skin to breathe. • Pollution and high humidity • Squeezing and picking at pimples. • Scrubbing your skin to hard. • Stress. Contrary to popular belief the foods you eat do not lead to the formation of pimples. There is little scientific evidence that proves that chocolate and greasy foods cause outbreaks of pimples. This does not mean that you should eat a bunch of un-healthy food either. A proper diet will help your body deal with any of the stresses that may lead to outbreaks in a much easier way. A home remedy for pimples includes the following: • Cleaning your skin gently, particularly your face. It is best to use a mild cleanser twice a day. Do not scrub your face with a rough scour pad and do not use an astringent except for on very oil spots. You can make your pimples worse if you aren’t gentle with your skin care. • Don’t pick at and pop your pimples. As fun as this may be for some people it can lead to scarring and dark skin blotches. • Shaving carefully. Make sure your razor is sharp and thoroughly soften your whiskers with warm soap and water. Nicking existing blemishes can make your pimple outbreaks worse. • Don’t over expose your skin to the sun. While it may appear that a nice tan makes your pimples go away in reality it only makes them less visible. The risks of over exposure to the sun, rapid skin aging and skin cancer, far outweigh any benefit a tan will have for your condition. • Cosmetics. It is best to choose cosmetics that are oil free. Look for labels that say noncomedogenic. This means they will not lead to clogged pores. Just about everyone deals with outbreaks of pimples during their life. Nearly 80% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 are affected by them at least once in their life. Most people tend to see their outbreaks disappearing in their thirties; however, some people in their 40s and 50s continue to suffer from this skin problem. A home remedy for pimples is about following some simple guidelines and common sense. If you are careful with your skin care and follow these tips chances are your pimples will disappear.br
