While chemical based skincare and acne products have an established place in the fight against bad skin, they are not the only solution. If youre one of those people who want to get clearer skin, but are reluctant to use chemicals or cant afford proprietary treatments, then you need look no further than your kitchen for natural acne remedies.
Although we think of acne and problem skin as modern afflictions, a look back in time disproves this. A Book of Fruits and Flowers, published in England four centuries ago, includes a home remedy for pimples. The main ingredient of the remedy is lemon. Known as an astringent, and so good for closing the pores, lemon juice can also be used directly on pimples, either neat or diluted for sensitive skin, to help dry them out.
Another useful ingredient in the quest for clear skin is an egg. The white of an egg, beaten until frothy and applied to the face, makes a great oil-reducing mask. Leave it to dry for about 15 minutes then rinse off. For a less drying, more nourishing mask, use live bio yogurt on your face instead.
Cucumbers, often used to reduce puffiness around the eyes, are also good at reducing acne inflammation. Simply slice and lay the pieces on your face, or mash into a paste and apply. Relax while your skin is soothed.
A great clear skin ingredient from your kitchen is oatmeal. Oatmeal is good at drawing out impurities from the skin, and can be used on its own or mixed to a paste with water, egg or honey and applied as a mask. Alternatively, it can be used as a scrub to take care of blackheads.
There is one kitchen ingredient that you cant be without if you are treating skin problems naturally, and thats honey. Honey has antibacterial properties, making it an ideal substance to use on inflamed skin. It can be mixed with a variety of kitchen ingredients such as banana, oatmeal, apple, yogurt and wheat germ to provide soothing masks or cleansing scrubs. It can even be used on its own, warmed and spread over the face. Sticky but soothing! Use locally sourced, unblended honey to get the best nutrients.
So you see, taking the natural route to healthy skin doesnt need to involve a trip to a drug store or pharmacy – simply take a look at whats in your kitchen first!
